BASIC
RULES OF TABLE TENNIS - SINGLES
Toss
Player winning "Toss of Coin" or winning "hide
ball" reserves the right to select serve or side.
Service Rule
Free hand should hold the ball in palm, clearly visible to the
opponent. Palm should be behind the baseline. Ball should be tossed
up at least 6 inches and the ball should be hit on its way back. Ball
should touch server's end once and cross over the net and touch the opponent's
area once and then on the ball should bounce once either side before it is hit.
Service Let (Re-serve)
While serving, after hitting server's area once, if the ball
touches the net and falls in the opponent's area, then a let or re-serve is
given. Maximum lets will be two and the third time point is awarded to the
opponent. However if the balls touches the net during rally and bounces in the
opponent's area, the play should continue.
How the points are won?
a) If the ball after
hitting lands outside the opponent's area of table, point is awarded to the
opponent.
b) If the ball hits the
net and does not cross the striker's area, point is awarded to the opponent.
c) If the ball is taken by
the player before it bounces in his area, point is awarded to the opponent.
d) If the ball crosses the
base line of the receiver without bouncing in his area, receiver gets the point
even if the ball hits the bat beyond baseline or the receiver catches it.
e) If the ball hits the sides of the table (Anywhere on top of the
table is right, even the top edge of the table), opponent gets a point.
f) If the Free Hand of the
player touches the table, opponent is awarded a point.
g) If the server drops the
ball without hitting, opponent gets a point.
Points in a game
Games are played for 21 points and each player gets 5 consecutive
serves. However if the points are tied at 20, then players gets one
serve each and a player reaching a difference of two points wins the game. Player
winning a Game reserves the right to serve in the next game. In case of a
players winning one game apiece, there will be a side change once the leading
player reaches 11 points. Winner of the match gets 2 points.

RULES FOR DOUBLES
1. Toss
Players of the team losing the toss should go and occupy their
position (receiver and non-receiver).
Team winning the toss then can decide the server and non-server.
2. Play in Turns
If one player receives the ball, he should play and give way to
his partner to receive the next return i.e. players should play alternately.
3. Service Rules
Service always starts at right hand side of the table and the
serve should land diagonally opposite i.e. right side of the opponent.
4. Player Swapping
Once a server finishes his quota of services and side over occurs,
the players of the serving side should swap places i.e. the side which has just
finished serving.
5. Order of receiving service in the next game
Team winning a game reserves the right to serve in the next game.
The player who received the service in the first game should not
receive in the next game.
In the third game, the order of receiving will be similar to that
